THE NUMBERS

Child Sexual Violence Statistics: From 2021 to 2022, 72% of all child abuse cases reported were sexual in nature, with nearly 6,600 cases of sexual abuse recorded in 2022 alone.

High Prevalence of Abuse: Approximately 7 million children are sexually abused every year in the Philippines, with 98% of these victims being girls

BEHIND THE CULTURE

Many victims remain silent due to cultural stigma and fear of family shame, with studies indicating that two out of three children do not report their abuse, often because they do not recognize it as such

A national survey found that the lifetime prevalence of sexual abuse among Filipino youth is about 21.5%, with higher rates reported among girls compared to boys

Their cry is mostly silent

Women are starting to discover their voices in various parts of the world, particularly in places like the Philippines, where traditional gender norms are quite strong. It’s a journey that comes with its fair share of societal challenges. While there’s definitely a rising feeling of empowerment, it’s important to remember that young girls, who are often quite vulnerable, can sometimes be overlooked. For many young people, facing abuse can be incredibly tough. They go through so much pain while feeling like they have to keep quiet because of family expectations, cultural norms, or worries about what might happen if they speak up.

Sometimes, these girls end up in situations where voicing their thoughts feels like it’s going against the norm or might even lead to some tough consequences. It’s such a shame that families, communities, and even institutions, which are meant to support us, sometimes focus more on their reputation, traditions, or denial instead of what really counts—justice and healing. As a result, these young survivors frequently end up shouldering their trauma alone, feeling like their voices are hushed by a society that hasn’t completely embraced their right to be heard and protected.

The quiet environment around these girls lets offenders continue their harmful behavior, which only contributes to society’s lack of concern. To truly shake things up, we should concentrate on making changes at the institutional level instead of just counting on individual bravery. Creating a space where every girl can express herself and find her voice with kindness and support is all about community-driven advocacy, education, and initiatives. Together, we can make a difference!

The silence remains a strong companion to their struggles until that time; it’s a wall that needs to come down if we want to truly support justice and equality for everyone.
